LG range hood: grease buildup fire prevention advisory — here’s what you need to know.

Applies To: All LG range hoods and over-the-range microwaves with ventilation

Advisory Type: Fire prevention advisory

Issue: Range hood filters and exhaust ducting accumulate grease from cooking. Grease is highly flammable, and a grease-laden filter or duct can ignite from stove-top flames, particularly during high-heat cooking. Grease fires in range hoods can spread rapidly to cabinetry and walls.

Maintenance Required: Clean or replace range hood filters every 1–3 months depending on cooking frequency. Metal mesh filters can be cleaned in the dishwasher or soaked in a degreasing solution. Charcoal filters (in recirculating hoods) must be replaced, not cleaned. Have exhaust ductwork professionally cleaned annually if you cook frequently with oil or at high temperatures.

If a Grease Fire Occurs: Never throw water on a grease fire — it will cause a dangerous splatter and spread the fire. Turn off the heat source. If safe to do so, cover the pan with a metal lid to smother the flame. Use a Class B fire extinguisher if available. If the fire spreads to the range hood or cabinets, evacuate immediately and call 911. Never try to carry a burning pan — you risk spreading the fire and causing severe burns.
