LG Oven: Self-Clean Cycle Safety Precautions

LG oven safety notice — here is what every homeowner should know.

LG oven: self-clean cycle safety precautions — here’s what you need to know.

Applies To: All LG ovens with self-clean function

Advisory Type: Operating safety advisory

Issue: The self-clean cycle heats the oven to approximately 900°F to burn off food residue. While effective, this extreme temperature creates several safety considerations that users should be aware of.

Safety Precautions: Remove all items from the oven before starting self-clean, including racks, thermometers, and any cookware. Ensure adequate kitchen ventilation — open windows or run the range hood on high, as the process produces fumes from burning food residue. Keep children and pets away from the oven during the self-clean cycle — exterior surfaces can reach temperatures hot enough to cause burns. Never leave the home during a self-clean cycle.

Bird Safety: If you have pet birds, move them to a well-ventilated room away from the kitchen before running self-clean. Fumes from non-stick coatings and burned food can be fatal to birds, whose respiratory systems are extremely sensitive.

Usage Recommendation: LG recommends using the self-clean cycle no more than 4–6 times per year. Excessive use stresses oven components, particularly the door lock mechanism, electronic control board, and temperature sensor. For routine cleaning, use a paste of baking soda and water as a gentler alternative.
