LG refrigerator safety notice — here is what every homeowner should know.
LG refrigerator: food safety during power outage advisory — here’s what you need to know.
Applies To: All LG refrigerators and freezers
Advisory Type: Food safety advisory
Issue: During power outages, food stored in your LG refrigerator and freezer is at risk of reaching unsafe temperatures. The FDA states that refrigerated food above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be discarded. Consuming food that has been stored at unsafe temperatures can cause foodborne illness.
Temperature Hold Times: A full freezer maintains safe temperature (0°F or below) for approximately 48 hours with the door closed. A half-full freezer maintains temperature for about 24 hours. The refrigerator compartment maintains safe temperature (40°F or below) for approximately 4 hours with the door closed. Every door opening significantly reduces these times.
During the Outage: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Group frozen items together — they help keep each other frozen. If the outage is expected to last more than 4 hours, place ice in the refrigerator compartment to maintain temperature. Do not place hot food in the refrigerator during an outage.
After Power Returns: Check the temperature in both compartments with a thermometer. Discard any refrigerated food that has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours. Frozen food that still contains ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be safely refrozen, though quality may be affected. When in doubt, throw it out — the cost of discarded food is far less than the cost of foodborne illness.
