LG Dishwasher: Improper Detergent Use Warning

LG dishwasher safety notice — here is what every homeowner should know.

LG dishwasher: improper detergent use warning — here’s what you need to know.

Applies To: All LG dishwashers

Advisory Type: Proper use advisory

Issue: Using regular liquid dish soap (hand dishwashing detergent) in an LG dishwasher creates excessive suds that can overflow through the door seal, flooding the kitchen floor and potentially damaging the dishwasher’s electronic components. This is one of the most common causes of dishwasher service calls and is entirely preventable.

Important: Only use detergent specifically formulated for automatic dishwashers — available as pods, tablets, powder, or liquid. Never use hand dish soap, laundry detergent, or any other cleaning product not designed for dishwashers.

If Dish Soap Has Been Used: If suds are overflowing, stop the cycle immediately. Place towels around the base of the dishwasher to absorb water. Pour 1/2 cup of cooking oil over the suds inside the dishwasher to break them down, then run a rinse cycle. You may need to run 2–3 rinse cycles to fully clear all soap residue. Inspect the base of the dishwasher for water intrusion into electrical components.

Detergent Pod Safety: Store dishwasher detergent pods away from children. The concentrated chemicals in pods are toxic if ingested, and their candy-like appearance makes them attractive to young children. Keep pods in their original sealed container in a locked cabinet.
